Cultural Engagement Through Jazz

Engages in activities to promote and advance the jazz art form within the community.

Participates in and has won multiple national and international band competitions, including the American Legion National Concert Band Competition, Canadian National Exhibition, and international events in Sydney, Australia.

Fosters and encourages original music compositions for performance by band members.

Provides fellowship and social engagement for members through band activities, monthly organizational meetings, social functions, and structured roles such as personnel and equipment management.

Supports band operations through income generated from performances, raffles, special events, and tax-deductible donations received via PayPal and mail.

Manages band operations through structured roles including equipment managers, a library team of six members, and member-led setup and teardown of rehearsal and performance equipment on a rotating basis.

Performs at up to 30 concerts, parades, and civic, cultural, educational, charitable, and patriotic events annually as a non-professional community band combining symphonic and parade music.

Promotes interest and appreciation for band music among members and the broader community through performances, historical archives, and public events.

Presents American jazz to enrich the community through live performances and cultural events.

Offers a five-week immersive summer jazz education program for middle and high school students in New York City, including instruction in big band, combo, instrumental studio, ear training, jazz history, recording, composition/arranging, and performance practices. The program operates on a fee-based model with options for residential attendance, commuter lunch service, and specialized courses.

Provides youth jazz education programs designed to be accessible to all students, with structured curricula that develop understanding of jazz and equip students with tools for ongoing musical growth, including transcription, theory, and collaborative performance.

Organizes regular performance events for youth participants, including weekly middle school and high school combo performances, a concluding weekly Big Band concert, and a culminating one-day Fordham University Jazz Festival featuring student ensembles from across the region. The festival includes performance slots, warm-up time, and post-performance clinics led by faculty and guest artists.

Organizes and presents the Pappy Martin Legacy – Masten Jazz Festival annually at Martin Luther King, Jr. Park and the Buffalo Museum of Science, a tradition ongoing since 1996. The free two-day festival features international, national, and local jazz artists and attracted approximately 3,000 attendees in 2023.

Produces the Celestial Jazz Series, a concert series featuring world-class jazz artists that highlights mental wellness and spiritual healing through jazz. In 2024, presented six free live concerts that included performances by students and faculty from its music education program.
