SULLIVAN FREE LIBRARY

Offers lending of books, audiobooks, music, periodicals, DVDs, films, read-along kits, and story boxes with standard loan periods of 3 weeks for most items and 2 days to 1 week for DVDs. Also provides remote access to digital resources including eBooks, eAudiobooks, digital magazines via OverDrive, and subscription databases such as Consumer Reports, ComicsPlus, CreativeBug, Mango Languages, Mometrix, and Novel List Plus for library cardholders.

Manages and maintains library facilities in Chittenango and Bridgeport within the Town of Sullivan, providing access to collections, services, and programs for the community. The libraries serve approximately 200 daily users with nearly 100,000 annual visits and maintain a collection of over 70,000 books, 7,000 audiovisual materials, and 1,500 periodicals.

Offers reference services through email, phone, and in-person during operating hours, with access to online resources including Credo, Refdesk.com, MidYork Library System’s article databases, Ancestry, and FamilySearch available remotely or in-library. Directs patrons to external resources when the library is closed.

Organizes recurring book discussion groups for adults at both Bridgeport and Chittenango locations, including the “Attic Salt” Book Group (4th Tuesday monthly), Chittenango Book Break (2nd Tuesday), Evening Book Group (1st Tuesday), and Classics Book Group. Also hosts crafting groups (quilting, knitting/crocheting), writers’ groups, Mahjong, chess, and weight loss support groups.

Organizes regular educational and cultural programming including author talks and book signings (e.g., with local author Bellamy Beck), movie screenings for adults weekly at both locations, genealogy workshops, estate planning discussions, local history presentations, art shows, and “Art in the Park” during community events in Chittenango.

Provides free meeting room access for civic, nonprofit, and community groups at both Chittenango and Bridgeport locations, with accessible spaces equipped with AV technology, kitchen amenities, and seating for up to 70 (Chittenango) and 40 (Bridgeport). Small rooms accommodate up to 12. Businesses may rent space for $50 (half-day) or $100 (full-day); parties and for-profit uses incur a $50 fee.

Provides Story Time Play and Sing sessions for young children twice weekly in Chittenango and once weekly in Bridgeport, along with homework assistance after school, summer reading programs, age-specific activities during July and August, and library orientation for schools and preschools. Also hosts an ongoing "Adopt a Dinosaur" program at both locations.

Runs Twice Sold Tales, a used bookstore at the Chittenango location offering low-cost books, DVDs, and audiobooks. Also administers a Gifts Program that accepts cash donations to purchase materials in honor or memory of individuals, with commemorative bookplates affixed to donated items.

Offers public computer terminals with internet access, word-processing, and spreadsheet software, limited to 90 minutes per day per user. Provides wireless internet throughout the buildings, printing (first five pages free for students), copying (20¢ B/W, 25¢ color), faxing ($1 first page sent, 50¢ additional; 50¢ per page received), and notary services at the Chittenango location.

Offers in-person and online pre-registration for library cards requiring ID verification, issues cards to minors with parental accompaniment, renews privileges every three years, allows self-service and automatic renewal of materials (up to two times), and provides PIN assistance and changes via online portal or in person. Replacement cards cost 50¢ after the first.

Provides interlibrary loan services for materials not available through the Mid-York Library System and accepts donations of clean, gently used books, DVDs, and audiobooks on CD during business hours, except during specific months due to event preparations. Donated items are sold in the annual used book sale or added to the collection.
