Music as Therapeutic Intervention

Conducts research on the neural and physiological mechanisms of music interventions, including studies on music improvisation in stroke rehabilitation and social motor synchrony using smartwatch technology. Also conducted the federally funded five-year Music Therapy Project for Psychotic Children Under Seven at the University of Pennsylvania.

Raises funds and provides financial support to sustain music therapy services, including sliding-scale fee assistance for clients and families, and supports the operation of the Nordoff-Robbins Center for Music Therapy at New York University through donations and fundraising events.

Delivers individual and group music therapy sessions using Nordoff-Robbins methods to children, adolescents, and adults with autism, developmental disabilities, trauma, cancer, dementia, neurological disorders, and psychological challenges, both in-person and remotely. Services are offered weekly at the Nordoff-Robbins Center at New York University and include adaptive music instruction, emotional exploration through verbal processing, and specialized programming for survivors of sexual assault.

Offers an internship program for graduate students, a post-masters Certification program, and annual training in advanced Nordoff-Robbins techniques. Provides faculty development and clinical education through experienced leadership, including the Foundation Director and Faculty Director, and produces instructional materials and research for the broader music therapy field.

Provides interactive and therapeutically oriented music programming to individuals with Alzheimer's disease and/or dementia, including those in nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and seniors living at home, to support socialization, movement, memory care, creative expression, and quality of life.

Creates and records custom songs for families with loved ones in hospice care or hospitals, providing emotional support during end-of-life experiences.

Produces an annual tuition-free holiday community musical theatre production open to participants ages 8 through young adult, fostering inclusive community engagement through performance.

Hosts performance opportunities for adult students twice a year in January and June, supporting ongoing musical development and public engagement.

Offers a chamber music program featuring 8 coaching sessions per semester in Fall and Spring, culminating in live performances for students of all ages.

Provides music and art therapy services, early childhood music classes, a concert series, and a pre-college honors academy program as part of its comprehensive music education offerings.

Offers private, semi-private, and group music lessons in all instruments including voice, music theory, ear-training, composition, and songwriting during the academic year, with private instruction also available during summer months.

Provides summer programs in early childhood music, chamber music, composition, and musical theatre, emphasizing community-building and musical growth, with private instruction also available during summer.

Hosts coaching sessions and virtual discussions on topics such as professional collaboration and musical improvisation, featuring artists like Leah Hawkins and Noam Sivan.

Hosts artistic and pedagogical explorations of Beethoven’s piano sonatas, including Op. 7 and Op. 90, through performances, discussions, and written contributions such as architect Hanson Liu’s analysis of Beethoven’s daily walks and creative process.

Awards scholarships to young pianists during formal events, such as those held at the Morgan Library & Museum, to advance their musical education and career development.

Hosts monthly public and hybrid events, including the 21 Sessions series and The Stella Series, that explore connections between music, art, and the humanities, particularly during the pandemic period from 2021 to 2022.

Provides structured development programs for young pianists, including master classes, mentoring, and collaborative initiatives such as a week-long program with the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity for pianists aged 18 and above.

Organizes high-profile recitals, master classes, and performance opportunities for emerging and laureate pianists at major venues and institutions such as The Juilliard School, often in collaboration with partners like Steinway & Sons. Includes selecting a Laureate pianist and providing them with public performance and outreach opportunities.
