North Lindenhurst Volunteer Fire Departm

Conducts regular clean-up and maintenance of fire stations and fire department vehicles to ensure operational readiness. The department has replaced and upgraded apparatus over time, including selling older engines to fund new equipment such as Grumman-Kenworth pumpers.

Conducts regular training drills twice per month and participates in controlled burn exercises, vehicle fire training, and emergency extrication operations using tools such as the Hurst Tool. The department trains members in advanced emergency medical skills including EMT certification and childbirth emergencies.

Organizes ongoing fundraising events to support department operations and maintains a Ladies Auxiliary formed in 1960 to support departmental functions through formal organization and community engagement.

Provides emergency medical services including ALS cardiac care, first responder units, and ambulance services. The department has responded to medical emergencies such as heart attacks, provided life-saving resuscitation, and conducted rescues including extricating lost firefighters and supporting police during active incidents. The rescue squad was formally established in 1958 and expanded in 2001 to allow direct entry as rescue personnel.

Conducts fire safety education programs including CPR training, smoke detector guidance, and community fire prevention initiatives. The department provides information on smoke detector placement and maintenance based on National Fire Protection Agency standards and has hosted open houses and participated in parades to engage the public.

Provides firefighting and fire protection services using fire apparatus, including pumpers and aerial ladders, responding to approximately 900–1,300 rescue calls and 120–160 fire calls annually. The department has operated various pumpers over time, including a 1947 American LaFrance and modern Grumman-Kenworth models, and has participated in mutual aid responses, including at the scene of the 9/11 attacks.

Collects and maintains historical materials including photographs and uniform records, particularly in preparation for the 50th anniversary of the department, and preserves leadership history such as the number of captains and officers over time.

Operates a Junior Fire Department with continuous elected officer structure since 1974, providing training and pathways to active membership. Thirty-nine former junior members have become active firefighters, with some rising to Captain or Chief. In 2006, nine junior members completed basic fire training and received certification.

Fields competitive teams in firefighting drill competitions and softball tournaments. The Piston Knockers Drill Team has won multiple New York State Championships, and the softball team has maintained a 51-game winning streak and won eight league championships between 1993 and 2004, participating in regional and state-level tournaments.
