Reputational Pressure for Accountability

By exposing systemic harms or corporate misconduct through investigative research and public campaigns, organizations compel corporate and policy change, because reputational risk motivates market actors to reform practices to avoid consumer backlash, regulatory scrutiny, and loss of legitimacy. This strategy centers on leveraging public visibility and moral accountability to drive behavioral change among powerful institutions, particularly corporations and policymakers. It is distinct from capacity-building or service-delivery models because it targets systemic change indirectly through social pressure rather than directly through technical assistance or legal enforcement. While some organizations use pre-disclosure engagement to enable voluntary remediation, others amplify pressure via media and public mobilization—yet all share the core belief that reputation-sensitive entities can be moved to act when their practices are scrutinized and exposed.
