Peer-Powered Learning

Provides a year-round program of multi-week lecture courses and single-session lectures in literature, history, philosophy, art, film, music, and other liberal arts disciplines for mature adults, taught by subject-matter experts. Courses are held at the Mansion on the grounds of the Nassau County Museum of Art, with offerings across fall, winter/spring, and summer terms, including both in-person and online formats.

Provides ongoing educational courses on a wide range of intellectual topics including history, politics, music, literature, film, and cultural shifts for older adults, fostering community engagement and lifelong learning. Specific courses include explorations of the Gilded Age, Virginia Woolf’s writing, women in rock and roll, plant-based diets, and the Titanic.

Creates and distributes educational media including the YouTube program New Realities, interviews with prominent thinkers such as Dr. Deepak Chopra and Bruce Lipton, and video clips from public sessions. Also includes producing nationally aired documentaries for CBS Sunday Morning and PBS in collaboration with Ken Burns.

Produces and screens independent films such as "Solid State" and the award-winning feature film _A/way_ at multiple film festivals, including Dances with Films NY and the Art of Brooklyn Film Festival, where it received awards for Outstanding Feature, Director, and Performance in a Narrative Feature Film.

Provides academic writing support to graduate students through the Center for Academic Writing, recognized as a "Writing Program of Excellence," and offers non-degree and micro-credential programs for professionals and leaders via the Educational Outreach Office in collaboration with faculty and external partners.

Operates 11 research centers including the CEU Democracy Institute, CEU Institute for Advanced Study (IAS), Center for Ethics and Law in Biomedicine (CELAB), and Blinken Open Society Archives, conducting large-scale research projects, hosting fellowships, and organizing conferences and workshops on topics such as democracy, disinformation, and human rights.

Offers 3 bachelor's, 35 master's, and 11 doctoral degree programs across 14 academic departments in social sciences, humanities, law, data science, political science, and public policy, taught in English at campuses in Vienna and Budapest.

Provides merit-based grants for master’s and doctoral students, including funding for study abroad (3–12 months), research and fieldwork (up to 5,200 EUR), conference travel, and participation in Summer and Winter Schools for doctoral students who have passed comprehensive exams.

Hosts public lectures, educational programs, cultural events, exhibitions (including a traveling exhibition on CEU’s history), and seasonal schools such as the CEU Summer University, promoting civic dialogue and intellectual exchange in Vienna and Budapest.

Collects, preserves, and provides open access to historical materials related to Cold War history, international human rights violations, and marginalized voices; serves as an archive of last resort for endangered documents and develops digital tools to contextualize archival content. Hosts students and researchers from CEU and global institutions for teaching and research based on its collections.

Organizes field trips to Donau-Auen National Park and urban farms, and launched a Sustainability Hub to promote environmental awareness and sustainable practices among students and the broader CEU community.

Operates medical and psychological counseling services, child-friendly facilities (including baby rooms and kid-friendly offices), diaper-changing stations, dining facilities (Lia Canteen, Central Canteen, Brunch Bistro), event spaces, and supports over 30 student clubs with funding and resources. Hosts orientation programs for incoming students.

Supports displaced Ukrainian scholars through the Invisible University for Ukraine initiative and runs Access Programs that create pathways into higher education for underrepresented youth and develop critical thinking skills among adults from underprivileged communities in Vienna and Austria.

Implements capstone projects, internships, Applied Policy Projects, Policy Lab, KIKO-lab, Community Engagement Track, Civic Engagement Fellowships, Summer Schools, and third-party funded collaborations with civil society partners to integrate practice-oriented learning into academic training.

Trains PhD candidates in qualitative and quantitative research methodologies and supports them in developing original, independent research projects in alignment with CEU’s emphasis on critical inquiry and ethical scholarship.

Provides intellectually challenging peer learning and community engagement opportunities for adults in New York who are no longer in full-time careers.

Offers approximately 300 educational classes annually to over 600 unique participants, with topics including exercise, health, aging, and falls prevention, delivered through in-person, Zoom, and hybrid formats.

Utilizes volunteers to teach approximately half of its educational classes and supports an intergenerational tutoring program, with 15 volunteers participating in 2023 and 10 in 2021.
