Joint Governance Model

methodology: joint_governance

By co-equal labor-management governance in benefit fund decision-making, organizations achieve balanced, trusted, and sustainable outcomes, because shared authority ensures accountability to both worker needs and operational realities. This strategy centers on structuring nonprofit benefit funds with equal representation from labor and employer trustees, creating a checks-and-balances system that aligns incentives and prevents dominance by any single stakeholder group. Unlike top-down or employer-controlled models, this approach institutionalizes worker voice directly into governance, fostering legitimacy, transparency, and long-term stability in union-sponsored benefits. While several organizations implement variations—such as discretionary trustee powers or peer support integration—the core theory of change consistently relies on joint decision-making as the engine for equitable and effective service delivery.
