How they approach the work
Named approaches extracted from this org’s sources. Where others share an approach, follow it to see the full set of orgs running it.
- Democratic Governance and Participatory Educationmethodology: participatory_educationBy combining adult experiential learning with ongoing training and collaborative decision-making, residents develop the skills and confidence to effectively govern their co-ops and advocate for policy change, because participatory education strengthens democratic capacity and collective action.
- Early Intervention and Systemic Advocacymethodology: early_interventionBy intervening early in at-risk HDFC co-ops and organizing tenants against predatory equity, U-HAB prevents displacement and systemic disinvestment, because proactive technical assistance and borough-wide campaigns shift power dynamics and preserve community-controlled housing at scale.
- Resident-Controlled Housing Modelmethodology: resident-controlled_housingBy establishing democratically governed housing cooperatives (HDFCs), residents gain control over management and maintenance decisions, leading to stronger stewardship, long-term affordability, and resilience against predatory ownership because collective ownership fosters accountability, reduces displacement risk, and builds community power.
- Sweat Equity and Shared Ownershipmethodology: sweat_equityBy using sweat equity—where residents contribute labor instead of capital—U-HAB lowers financial barriers to cooperative ownership and rehabilitation, because shared labor investment increases resident commitment, reduces costs, and builds equity in the community.
