Provides grants to support research and development initiatives at leading academic and medical research institutions, including Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, Princeton University, The Scripps Research, Weill Medical Center, Mayo Clinic, and Project ALS Inc.

Offers charitable grants to organizations such as Weill Medical Center, Project ALS Inc., and Timmerman Traverse to support their medical and scientific missions.

Provides grants to partner organizations to support events involving ophthalmology alumni and residents.

Provides grants to individual physicians and academic departments to support research in ophthalmology.

Provides awards to ophthalmology residents through the NYAOM Ophthalmology Residents' Award program, supporting trainee recognition and development.

Engages in advocacy to protect access to high-quality neurosurgical care in New York State, including opposing unbalanced liability legislation (S.4423/A.6063) and supporting Governor Hochul’s proposal to preserve health coverage for 1.3 million New Yorkers through a Basic Health Plan. Participates in coalition efforts and political engagement to influence health policy.

Operates with an elected leadership structure including President, Vice President, and Secretary for the 2025–2027 term, and offers a delegate program for registered members. Collects annual dues of $200 from attending and associate physicians and $100 from resident physicians to support organizational operations.

Offers accredited educational activities, including its annual meeting, which provides 2.5 AMA PRA Category I Credits™ to physician participants. The organization supports continuing medical education through ACCME accreditation and presents research abstracts at organized scientific meetings.

Recognizes and promotes resident research through monetary awards and presentation opportunities at its annual meeting. Facilitates dissemination of research findings by featuring accepted abstracts on its website and organizing forums for scientific exchange among neurosurgeons in New York State.

Hosts the annual Charles Snyder Lecture series (established 1991) featuring prominent speakers, sponsors the Marmor Lecture at the American Academy of Ophthalmology meeting, and awards the Charles Snyder Medal (established 2020) and Meritorious Service Medal to recognize contributions to ophthalmic history.

Provides financial support through the Fund for Trainee Support, established in 2012, to cover registration and related expenses for students and trainees interested in ophthalmic history, enabling their participation in society events.

Preserves and maintains permanent historical archives in collaboration with the Museum of Vision at the American Academy of Ophthalmology, ensuring long-term access to materials related to the history of ophthalmology.

Hosts an annual meeting lasting approximately one and a half days, featuring around 25 presentations, to support the presentation and discussion of research in ophthalmic history and associated fields. Recent and upcoming meetings have been held in locations including Richmond, Virginia (2026), San Francisco (2027), and St. Louis (2015–2016).

Supports the publication of research presented at annual meetings by publishing papers in the Proceedings of the Society and facilitating the publication of oral presentations in peer-reviewed journals. Maintains public access to Proceedings volumes through the Truhlsen-Marmor Museum of the Eye.
