Medical Equipment Redistribution

Provides medical equipment donations to hospitals and medical practices in low-income areas both within the United States and abroad.

Facilitates partnerships with hospitals, corporate donors, and employer match campaigns to collect and distribute in-kind donations. Offers customizable programs with impact tracking and administrative support, including scheduled pickups and annual impact reporting for partner hospitals.

Implements programs to strengthen health systems in underserved regions, including Puerto Rico, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Tanzania, Lebanon, and Ethiopia, through the delivery of medical supplies and ongoing support.

Responds to disease outbreaks, natural disasters, conflicts, and other humanitarian emergencies by mobilizing and delivering medical supplies and personal protective equipment. Activities include support during the 2014–2016 Ebola epidemic and the Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak in Uganda and surrounding regions.

Distributes rescued medical and wellness supplies to local clinics and organizations in the New York metropolitan area. In one reporting period, delivered supplies 465 times to 207 distinct organizations, totaling over 353,000 pounds and nearly $3.1 million in value, with 96 organizations placing repeat orders.

Diverts surplus medical supplies from landfills by rescuing and redistributing them, contributing to environmental sustainability. Has diverted over 9.5 million pounds of medical waste from landfills.

Rescues unused medical and humanitarian supplies and equipment from hospitals and manufacturers, both domestically and globally, and distributes them to under-resourced health systems. The organization has distributed medical supplies valued at up to $68 million to 91 countries, including shipments in response to crises such as the Ebola outbreaks in West Africa and Uganda.

Engages volunteers in sorting and preparing medical supplies for shipment through on-site and offsite events, including corporate and community groups. Operates pre-vocational programs for at-risk populations such as older adults, young adults with ASD and IDD, veterans, and incarcerated individuals, providing inclusive opportunities for individuals of all abilities.

Collects surplus prosthetic equipment from across the United States and redistributes it to clinics in low- and middle-income countries.

Purchases or assists in the purchase of equipment and supplies for use in New York City municipal hospitals and related medical facilities.

Supports programs to train and educate employees, residents, and fellows in New York City municipal hospitals and related medical facilities on patient care and patient safety topics.

Raises funds to purchase and distribute medical supplies and equipment to doctors and hospitals serving underserved populations.

Advocates before federal and state policymakers to establish, protect, and improve coverage, coding, and payment policies for Complex Rehab Technology (CRT), including successful efforts to secure a National Coverage Determination and dedicated HCPCS code (E2298) with a national fee schedule ($2,000.34) for power seat elevation systems effective April 1, 2024.

Creates and provides free educational materials, including a 63-page booklet titled "COMPLEX," funding guides with evaluation worksheets, and presentations to increase awareness of CRT, its benefits, and processes for securing coverage and access.

Provides updates and personalized guidance to individuals on potential impacts to CRT access, including how to file grievances with health plans and contact state agencies like the Oregon Health Authority to resolve access barriers.

Produces and distributes a monthly newsletter with updates on CRT Medicare and Medicaid policies, advocacy opportunities, and events, and facilitates direct communication with elected officials through advocacy links.

Produces detailed policy analysis reports on CMS coding and payment decisions and commissioned an independent financial study on the performance and cost allocations of CRT companies conducted by the Simon Business School at the University of Rochester in 2008.

Provides strategic advice and convenes committees to assist suppliers and manufacturers in addressing significant state-level CRT coverage, funding, and access issues and developing resolution strategies.
