Library of Things Expansion

methodology: library_of_things

By lending non-traditional items through a Library of Things model, the library increases access to tools and resources for learning, recreation, and self-sufficiency, because extending lending beyond books reduces economic and ownership barriers and meets diverse community needs. This strategy centers on expanding the library’s role beyond books to include physical items like tools, technology, games, and museum passes, thereby democratizing access to resources that support lifelong learning, wellness, and cultural engagement. Unlike general collection expansion, this approach specifically targets under-accessed or high-cost items, using lending as an equity intervention to empower individuals across socioeconomic groups. The shared belief across organizations is that access—not ownership—fosters inclusion, skill-building, and sustained engagement with the library as a dynamic community resource.
