Diaspora-Engaged Capacity Building

Implements a preventive care model through oral hygiene campaigns, education activities around World Oral Health Day, and solidarity-funded prevention initiatives to promote long-term dental health in underserved communities.

Operates the largest dental care facility in Haiti, providing comprehensive dental services across six specialties to approximately 8,000 patients annually, including 5,500 new patients. The clinic is staffed by 35 employees, including dentists, hygienists, and technicians, and serves patients with serious dental pathologies from across Haiti.

Delivers free dental care to schoolchildren aged 6 to 20 and provides affordable and free dental services to adults, including restavèk children. Conducts off-site preventive interventions and school-based care programs as part of its public health mission.

Offers advanced dental interventions including buccal tumor removal surgeries and reconstructive maxillofacial surgery for adults and children with complex conditions such as multiple jaw fractures, supported by specialized infrastructure and equipment.

Procures dental supplies, electronic equipment, and ships them to Haiti via UPS to support clinical operations and surgical care delivery at the Canapé-Vert clinic, with documented expenses for supplies and shipping.

Hosts and implements training programs for dental assistants and hygienists, including a two-week intensive program in Haiti, to build local capacity in dental care delivery.

Conducts an annual multi-day scientific conference in both in-person and virtual formats, featuring symposia in nephrology, cardiology, pulmonary medicine, obstructive sleep apnea, diabetes, obesity, thyroid disorders, HIV, dermatologic diseases, malignancies, liver transplantation, cardiac surgery, and the impact of artificial intelligence in medicine; broadcasts the event to hospitals throughout Haiti.

Creates and performs plays and dances for AMHE chapter events and annual conventions; recognized Stephen Hricko for achievements in theater, including performances at the Midtown International Festival in New York City and receipt of the Governor’s Award for Excellence in Theater in 2016.

Is developing a healthcare clinic in Darbone near Léogane, Haiti, to serve underserved populations.

Established eight regional chapters across the United States and Canada between 1972 and 2014, including New York, Baltimore/Washington, Chicago, Saint Louis, Montreal, New Jersey, South Florida, and Louisiana; evidence also references chapters in Haiti, indicating expansion beyond North America.

Generates financial resources through member dues, workshops, conferences, fundraising events, grants, and gifts including legacies and endowment funds; uses funds to cover operational expenses, implement approved projects, develop or facilitate grant-funded initiatives, and maintain a reserve fund; manages organizational finances and presents an annual accounting report to the General Assembly.

Conducts medical and public health missions in Haiti, including surgical deployments and pilot relief efforts; missions have taken place in locations such as Justinien University Hospital (Cap-Haitien), Hôpital St Antoine de Jérémie, and Cabaret, with documented activities from 2010 to 2013.

Operates a library resource and features biographies and artwork of Haitian artists through an online Artist Corner platform.

Produces and distributes a bi-weekly newsletter to share updates about the Association and its chapters' events.

Sponsors medical residents from Haiti to participate in clerkships at a hospital in Brooklyn, New York.

Engages in advocacy efforts aimed at enhancing public health policies and expanding healthcare access, particularly for underserved populations.

Runs programs to raise awareness about mental health and provide targeted support within Tamil communities.

Captures and shares stories of collaboration, patient care, and community impact using visual documentation to highlight program outcomes.
