Cultural Programming as Public Education

Conducts curatorial programs to educate the public about Asian contemporary art and culture and to promote collaboration among diverse artistic communities and audiences.

Delivers art presentations as part of its program services, engaging audiences through artistic performance or exhibition.

Awards approximately 20 semester-long Berlin Prize fellowships annually to U.S. scholars, writers, and artists, enabling them to pursue independent research and creative projects in residence at the Hans Arnhold Center in Berlin.

Hosts an annual ceremony to award the Henry A. Kissinger Prize to prominent figures in international diplomacy for their contributions to the transatlantic relationship, with events held in Berlin and occasionally in New York City.

Develops and sustains an extensive network across academic, cultural, political, and corporate communities in the United States and Germany to support intellectual exchange and collaboration.

Hosts Distinguished Visitors from the United States who engage with public and professional audiences in Berlin and across Germany on current political, cultural, and academic issues.

Organizes and hosts a public program of lectures, readings, performances, workshops, and discussions in Berlin and via livestream, featuring fellows, distinguished visitors, and prominent guests on topics spanning literature, art, politics, and international relations.

Maintains a library of over 9,000 holdings in the humanities and political science and provides inter-library loan, express delivery, extended lending terms, and a document-delivery service to support the research of fellows at the Hans Arnhold Center.

Organizes and presents major exhibitions at M+ Museum in Hong Kong, including retrospectives of I.M. Pei and Henry Steiner, and thematic exhibitions such as “Robert Rauschenberg and Asia,” “Picasso for Asia: A Conversation,” and “Lee Mingwei: Guernica in Sand,” featuring works from the M+ Collections.

Funds a contemporary visual arts museum (M+ Museum in Hong Kong), supporting its mission to promote visual culture from Asia globally through exhibitions, public programs, and collections.

Hosts panel discussions, artist conversations, and cultural events in the United States—particularly in New York City—to cultivate understanding of M+'s curatorial work and Asian perspectives on global contemporary art and design.

Organizes studio visits, behind-the-scenes access to cultural institutions, and immersive trips to Hong Kong—including participation in Art Basel Hong Kong and Frieze Seoul—to deepen member engagement with M+ and global contemporary art discourse.

Hosts programs that inform policymakers and the public about Asia, supporting deeper understanding of regional issues through dialogue, analysis, and educational outreach.

Produces objective, policy-relevant research on China’s politics, economy, and society through the Center for China Analysis, including publications, books, and articles on Chinese political history and reform-era developments.

Provides Chinese language courses to promote Mandarin learning in the U.S. and offers educational content on Asia for youth, families, and learners through structured programming and resources.

Organizes and presents pre-modern, modern, and contemporary Asian and Asian American art through exhibitions at museum spaces in New York, Hong Kong, and Houston, including solo and thematic shows featuring significant collections and artists.

Manages major cultural centers and public buildings in New York, Hong Kong, and Houston, with additional locations across the U.S., Asia, and Europe, serving as hubs for exhibitions, education, and policy programs.

Operates ChinaFile, an online magazine that publishes original reporting, essays, photography, and video on China, contributing to public understanding of Chinese foreign policy, history, and culture.
