Book Ownership as Empowerment

methodology: book-ownership-as-wealth

By giving children and families permanent ownership of books, we foster literacy development and personal agency, because owning books cultivates dignity, sustained engagement with reading, and a sense of cultural and intellectual belonging. This strategy centers book ownership not just as a means to increase access, but as a transformative act that builds self-worth, family literacy practices, and long-term educational identity. Unlike temporary or loan-based models, it emphasizes permanence, choice, and emotional connection to books as foundational to changing attitudes and outcomes around reading—particularly in under-resourced communities where book deserts and systemic inequities undermine educational equity.
