CIRCLE IN THE SQUARE THEATRE SCHOOL INC

Trains alumni to direct and perform in final productions of original plays written by 3rd-grade students from PS 11, presented on the Broadway stage at Circle in the Square Theatre School.

Delivers targeted classes in areas including on-camera audition techniques, musical theatre performance, stage combat, neutral mask, Laban movement, ballet, jazz dance, vocal technique, and monologue development using methodologies such as Declan Donnellan’s “Actor and the Target.”

Provides short-term actor training through summer workshops and condensed programs such as Contemporary Scene Study, Shakespearean Scene Study, and Broadway-focused workshops on shows like Hamilton and Six, culminating in student presentations.

Supports recent graduates through the Dot in the Box Theatre Company, an ensemble of six alumni selected via audition, offering performance opportunities, professional development seminars, and mentorship connections to ease the transition into professional theater.

Offers a paid training program for up to ten alumni annually to prepare them as teaching artists, providing a $1,200 stipend upon completion and equipping them to teach in New York City and other locations; has trained hundreds of alumni who work as teaching artists alongside their acting careers.

Runs an annual residency program now in its third year (as of 2026) that supports theater writers in developing new works highlighting underrepresented stories, with student actors and faculty, culminating in public readings on the Broadway stage; provides honoraria of $500 to playwrights and up to $1,000 to musical teams.

Produces and hosts professional Broadway and off-Broadway theatrical productions at its 50th Street theater, including nationally recognized works such as "Fun Home," "The River," "Lady Day at Emerson's Bar and Grill," and "An Enemy of the People," contributing to its legacy of over 150 productions.

Produces public performances by students including Grad Repertory Shows, Shakespeare and Theatre for Young Audiences productions, Industry Showcases for second-year students, Holiday Concerts, and staged readings of new works developed through residencies.

Conducts rolling admissions for the Two-Year Conservatory, Summer Intensive, and 2+2 BFA programs from October to July, offering Early Action and Rolling Admissions options and conducting remote auditions via Zoom, while adhering to Musical Theater Common Prescreen criteria and requiring Shakespearean monologues for certain programs.

Offers a joint BFA program in collaboration with Eckerd College, combining two years of liberal arts study with two years of professional conservatory training at Circle in the Square Theatre School, transferring up to 63 semester hours toward the degree.

Offers evening courses in tap dancing, playwriting, and directing available to current students and alumni of the theatre school.

Stages a series of plays annually as part of the Langdon Festival, featuring works such as "The Minutes," "Linda Vista," "Killer Joe," "Man from Nebraska," and "August: Osage County" performed by students.

Operates a full-time two-year Professional Theatre Workshop conservatory program in New York City that trains aspiring and professional actors in acting technique, voice, movement, and performance for live theatre, including specialized tracks in acting and musical theatre.
