Transparency as Leverage

Advocates for specific reforms to increase transparency and accountability in the U.S. Supreme Court, including term limits, a binding Code of Conduct, stronger recusal rules, public disclosure of outside appearances, and comprehensive online access to financial disclosures and court records. Supports legislation to protect judges from doxxing and improve financial disclosure standards for state judges.

Conducts and publishes in-depth research analyzing Supreme Court justices' financial disclosure reports, including income from royalties, gifts, investments, and teaching; maintains a public tally of justices' out-of-court appearances; and compiles evidence of ethical oversights such as omissions in disclosures and rulings amid conflicts of interest. Research also assesses compliance with ethics codes through analysis of travel, family relationships, speaking engagements, and recusal practices.

Files Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) lawsuits to obtain government records related to the federal judiciary, including documents from the Department of State and the Supreme Court, and publicizes findings related to justices' public activities and ethics vetting.

Co-hosts events with legal organizations such as the Federalist Society and the American Constitution Society at law schools to promote judicial transparency and accountability, and organizes public events highlighting threats to state court judges.

Co-launched and directs the Poison Papers Project to document chemical toxicity, failures in chemical risk assessment, and institutional collusion. Analyzed over 20,000 documents dating back to 1920, produced educational videos using the documents, and published findings to expose EPA regulatory failures related to industrial agriculture.

Collaborates with other nonprofit organizations on bioscience education initiatives and offers volunteer internships focused on writing, research, communication, and media skills. Internships result in concrete outputs such as published articles and reports, including journalism and research internships that train participants in public interest science communication.

Produces systematic biosafety reviews of genetic engineering techniques based on scientific literature research and publishes peer-reviewed papers on transformation-induced mutations, transcomplementation, and the distinct properties of GM proteins. Research is published in academic journals such as _Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering Reviews_ and _Molecular Plant Pathology_.

Makes all research, publications, and document archives—including the Poison Papers and Sanjour Hazardous Waste Files—freely available to scientists and the public. Distributes publications at seminars, conferences, and workshops, and publishes articles written by scientific experts for public consumption.

Engages in outreach through mainstream media publications, radio interviews, webinars, public speaking at conferences and universities, and making scientists available for media interviews on science, food, agriculture, health, and the environment. Also publishes shorter, less technical articles for external media outlets.

Funded the digitization of the "Poison Papers" and contributed digitized copies to the UCSF Industry Documents Library for long-term preservation and public access.

Produces and maintains the Independent Science News and Bioscience Resource Project websites, launched in 2011 and 2012 respectively, to expand public access to scientific research and analysis. Also manages social media accounts, mailing lists, and website content including photo slideshows and outreach materials.

Conducts scientific research and analysis on food and agriculture systems, their impacts on health and the environment, and related topics such as SARS-CoV-2 origins and biosafety. Published work includes papers like “Will gene-edited and other GM crops fail sustainable food systems?” and “The myth of a food crisis” in the book _Rethinking Food and Agriculture_.

Identifies and documents the scale and impact of online misinformation, including health-related content with an estimated 3.8 billion views and climate misinformation reaching 25 million views on Facebook. Commissions studies showing that correcting exposure to false content reduces belief in disinformation by 50%.

Organizes and executes time-sensitive advocacy campaigns that mobilize public participation through petitions, member messages, and advertising; achieves tangible outcomes such as legislative support (e.g., Chile’s 40-hour workweek) and removal of disinformation networks ahead of EU elections. Campaigns are prioritized based on annual all-member polls and weekly surveys of 10,000 randomly selected members.

Facilitates and supports local and international campaigns initiated by its members, enabling grassroots efforts to create social change across countries. These member-led actions have resulted in documented victories and measurable political and social impacts globally.

Represents asylum seekers in legal proceedings, including advancing cases to the U.S. Supreme Court, and secures the return of deported individuals who suffered abuse in immigration detention.

Co-runs the Jailhouse Lawyers program with the National Lawyers Guild to support incarcerated individuals in advocating for their legal rights.

Files lawsuits to challenge laws and practices that violate civil rights, including bans on gender-affirming care in prisons, criminalization of sleeping outdoors for unhoused individuals, and surveillance of social movements.
