Narrative for Understanding

By using narrative and storytelling to frame complex or emotionally challenging topics, we increase public engagement and understanding, because stories make abstract ideas relatable, evoke emotional resonance, and support cognitive processing. This strategy centers on the belief that narrative—whether personal, cinematic, or artistic—acts as a cognitive and emotional bridge to complex domains like science, climate change, or mental health. It distinguishes itself from purely informational or didactic approaches by prioritizing emotional authenticity, lived experience, and interdisciplinary expression (e.g., film, theatre, youth journalism) to foster deeper comprehension and sustained engagement. While some organizations focus on accuracy or access, this shared theory of action emphasizes meaning-making through story as the primary vehicle for change.
