Breed-Specific Rehabilitation

Engages in activities aimed at promoting the welfare of Border Terrier dogs, including breed-specific health, care, and responsible ownership initiatives.

Engages in public education and advocacy for pit bulls through media outreach—including television appearances and national publications—and by organizing annual events such as Pit Bull Awareness Day, craft fairs, and virtual painting events that combine fundraising with breed promotion.

Manages the adoption process for rescued pit bulls by maintaining an updated list of adoptable dogs, processing online applications within 48 hours, hosting adoption clinics at community locations, and participating in multi-rescue adoption events. Also facilitates adoptions of bonded dog pairs.

Hosts and participates in fundraising events such as Hudson River cruise events, craft fairs, and virtual painting sessions to generate financial support for dog rescue, care, and adoption operations.

Provides comprehensive care for rescued dogs including spay/neuter services, vaccinations, food, housing, collars, leashes, and microchips using donated funds. This support is delivered directly to dogs in their care.

Rescues pit bull and pit bull mix dogs from abandonment, neglect, or deplorable conditions and places them into a network of volunteer-run foster homes. Capacity is determined by the number of available foster homes.

Operates a therapy dog program in which rescued pit bulls are trained and certified through Canine Good Citizenship and Therapy Dog International programs, then conduct visits to schools, nursing homes, hospitals, and rehabilitation centers to promote breed awareness and education.

Presents annual awards including the Breeder of the Year, Lifetime Achievement, Outstanding Sportsmanship, and the AKC Paw of Courage to honor contributions to the purebred dog community and heroic acts by working dogs.

Conducts advocacy and legislative monitoring to protect dog owners' rights, promotes responsible ownership, and has supported laws such as the federal PETS Act and Georgia’s anti-dogfighting legislation.

Provides grants through the AKC Canine Health Foundation to support millions of dollars in research on major dog diseases, funding scientists and professionals to advance the prevention and treatment of canine illnesses.

Provides grants and resources to organizations nationwide to support public education programs and government relations efforts, including funding 11 "pets allowed" women’s shelters for survivors of domestic violence.

Provides a free online account system and the Breeder Toolkit platform to manage dog registrations, breeding records, litter registrations, and ownership transfers across AKC systems.

Supports a national network of over 450 rescue groups that provide fostering and rehabilitation, and runs the AKC Reunite program, which has reunited over 470,000 lost pets with their owners through microchipping and a national recovery database.

Houses the largest collection of dog art in the U.S., preserves over 18,000 volumes including rare books and historical documents, provides online access to over 100 years of AKC publications, and offers in-person research access to its Library & Archives.

Hosts over 22,000 conformation, companion, and performance dog events annually, including large all-breed shows with over 3,000 dogs and receiving more than 3 million entries across agility, obedience, and other disciplines.

Offers outreach programs, publications, and advisory services on dog breed, health, training, and responsible breeding practices to strengthen the human-canine bond and promote dog welfare.

Registers over 1.2 million dogs and 555,000 litters annually, recognizing 200 dog breeds and preserving accurate lineage data to support breeding integrity and breed quality improvement.

Provides care and rescue services for Akita dogs, including sheltering, medical treatment, and rehoming.
