THE WORKING THEATRE CO INC

Annually commissions and develops new theatrical works focused on the experiences of working people, particularly those who lack resources to self-identify as professional artists. Through the Mark Plesent Commission Fund, provides up to two writers per year with $2,000 commission fees, professional mentorship from established playwrights, and developmental workshops with directors and actors.

Supports participants in advancing their writing and artistic careers by helping them apply to theater festivals, return to school, or receive future commissions. Partners with The Action Lab as an Anchor Partner to support playwright residencies and expand community engagement opportunities.

Offers a 12-16 week playwriting and performance program, including the TheaterWorks! class, in which participants develop original plays that culminate in a final off-Broadway performance with professional actors. The program has partnered with 10 unions, Cornell University ILR, CUNY, and the Climate Justice Institute, and offers bilingual sessions.

Stages public performances, readings, and special events that celebrate the cultural and labor contributions of working people, including tributes to figures like Yip Harburg and events such as “A Salute to Mine Workers,” as well as productions like Mike Batistick’s _Port Authority Throw Down_ and comedy-music evenings featuring artists like Lewis Black.

Produces and presents commissioned plays and original skits in labor training programs, union conferences, and workforce development settings across New York City. Examples include performances at Pathways2Apprenticeship training classes and events like IBEW Local 3’s labor management conference and the United Federation of Teachers’ youth conference.
